Tulum, Mexico: Louie the Bathroom Crab

Is that a crab looking at us from the bathroom?

I have full intentions to relax on vacation, but then arrive I want to see and do everything and forget to relax. So it was day two in Tulum and my SO and I were taking a little break to relax on the bed and read for a few minutes in the afternoon before getting ready for dinner at The Hartwood.

Jeff looks up from his book to inform me that there’s a crab in the bathroom. I peer over the top of my own book to catch a glimpse of this little guy(or girl) peering out at us from under the curtain from the floor to ceiling window between the bathroom and bedroom.

We got up to investigate our new houseguest. As we opened the door, he scuttled away to the far side of the bathroom.

After a bit of a chase, a putting up his dukes, our new friend grabbed onto the shower pipe and wouldn’t let go.

A little research revealed that blue land crabs are common in the area. We had a few trees that grew through the floor up through the ceiling in our bathroom with an open roof(just a screen) making it one of the more unique showers we have experienced on our travels. Our new little friend eventually did his little sideways dance into the hole in the floor next to one of the trees, where presumably he entered the bathroom initially. Anyway, we named him Louie. Louie the bathroom crab. One of our many animal friends we made in Tulum. Before bed each evening, I bid him goodnight, to which Jeff would question “did you just tell our bathroom crab goodnight?”
